Whale Shark Snorkeling 2013

During the whale shark season from May until September, the whale sharks come to Isla Contoy to feed on plankton where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico.

Its great size and enormous mouth which when opened can measure up to a meter and a half, makes it immediately recognizable. It is believed that it is a migratory species, but it is not known by accuracy where they come from and where they go to, but we know that they like swimming around in moderate warm waters and tropical seas around the world.

The experience is really amazing, nevertheless there is no need to be afraid as the Whale Sharks feed exclusively on tiny organisms known as "plankton", and this is why they are completely inoffensive for human beings.
